Today’s Music vs. The Good Old Stuff
By Kaylee Chamberlain
So we all know the age-old conflict regarding which generation of music is the best. Not really but let just say it is for the sake of the article. To me, the best music is the old stuff, but that’s just my opinion. The right opinion, but mine at that. I asked my friends if they had to pick between the 1970s-80s-90s music (Like your parents' kind of music) and today’s kind of music, which one would you say is your favorite?, and here is what I got.
Sixty-two percent of the respondents (about my age) said they preferred popular music from the 1970s-80s-90s over popular music from recent years. Actually, 62.5 percent. Granted, the sampling was only 16. people, but they were teenagers!
One reason as to why they chose the older music was, “I think older, just because the stories behind the songs, like today’s music has like a general message that is just worded differently. I mean, each generation has a specific message that they stand by, but the message from that time period was more broad and more free.” That was said by Isaiah Gentry. I don’t think he is wrong. When you look at the meanings behind today’s music most of it (not all) is “I’m depressed” or “ I need someone to love me to feel whole”. The music back then was freer, as Isaiah said. It’s happy and carefree.
Today’s music is great if you want to be really sad, or you just have the urge to cuss out your wall. I was looking through some of my favorite music from what’s considered the old stuff, and I couldn’t find many really sad songs. They all seemed to have some upbeat portion. I even tried to look up sad 80s songs and such. They were about sad things, but they did not sound too sad. Maybe that reveals a little bit about what the world is like now. This is just an idea. Take it as you wish, but I think that people nowadays like to dwell in sadness, and they just want to be pitied. I am not saying that is what everyone wants when they listen to sad music. Some of it sounds alright, and sometimes you just need to feel blue..*
That was a little off track. The point is that the old stuff is much better than the new “music” that is put out today. I mean today you can’t find any new music that sounds like Bruce Springsteen, Guns’n Roses, Journey, Tommy Tutone, and many others. It’s just so carefree and AWESOME. Those are my thoughts. As you can see there were just a few people who participated in the survey. I would love to get a larger number of responses to maybe get a better overall opinion from people our age. Please contact me if you would like to participate in a school-wide survey. :)
