Streaming Debates: A Great American Pastime
By Preston Mitchell
Two topics guaranteed to spice things up at family holiday conversations are politics and religion. We may have a third topic for this list: Streaming services.
One problem that many families seem to face is which streaming service is the best to fit their family television binge-watching needs. Many argue over dozens of streaming services, but the two that many seem to fight over are Disney-Plus and Netflix. So, which one is better? Well, this is just some information I’ve gathered that may help you figure out a final decision. And avoid awkward conversations.. No promises about settling family arguments.
Juan Cruz, 17, High School Senior:
“Disney plus is more centered towards kids, while Netflix has more shows and movies for people of all ages. Price also has a part to play, as those who want more cartoonish and cheaper content should aim for the Disney binging service, while those who are able to watch older content, more suited for people in their teens and above, should watch their shows on Netflix. I feel like Netflix is a better option for those who are looking for a wider selection of adult movies and shows, but also want some childish things if they want some.”
Wyatt Mitchell, 11, 6th grade:
“I think Disney plus is better than Netflix because it has more kid shows and movies. It can help keep children like me entertained while parents do their work. Netflix has some children's stuff, but not enough like Disney plus.”
Amanda Mitchell, 42, working mother:
“I see Disney plus as a more obvious choice for those who have kids, as while young kids don’t know what they’re doing, they can get into lots of mischief if they aren’t monitored, so it isn’t crazy to say that a child could go onto Netflix and watch a show that is not appropriate. Disney-plus is able to do this with their children-guard service. While they don’t have any really inappropriate content, the more child-friendly shows can become what the child watches due to the block and accounts the parents are able to put up in case of incidents like what I just mentioned.”
Todd Mitchell, 42, NAPA store manager and father:
“I see no problem with either until prices get involved. While the numbers don’t seem so different at first, if you have these streaming services, they’re going to put a dent in your wallet, but Disney-plus seems to be the cheaper option. Disney plus has mostly children themed shows on it, but many movies, like Marvel and Star Wars, are targeted towards teens or adults. For Netflix, you have to pay more for more adult content, so I see the choice really comes down to age limits in the household.”
Perhaps this won’t solve disputes over which streaming service is best for your family. But maybe it will help your conversation move forward in a positive direction.
