Mask Interviews with PRHS students
By Kaylee Chamberlain
If masks were suggested or encouraged, not required at school, would you wear them? Why or why not?
Alan Tibbetts: “ I would not wear a mask because I have difficulty breathing with them, and they are uncomfortable.”
Alexis Blair:
“I would because I think it’s a whole different layer of protection that could be a preventative. No, they’re not 100% accurate, but neither is a condom and people. So, wear them
Anonymous student:
“It would matter on how high the COVID rate would be ... If the rate for Covid in Maine was high I would wear a mask even if it wasn’t required, but if little to no people had Covid in the state, I most likely wouldn’t wear one.”
Are you skeptical about the effectiveness of masks for reducing Covid risks? Why?
Alan Tibbetts:
“ Yes, i’m skeptical because there have been so many changes to what works and what doesn’t that I don’t have faith.”
Alexis Blair:
“I’m not skeptical, but I know they have their flaws.”
Anonymous:
“No, because there is evidence that masks help protect people from the virus … Since the masks were first mandatory, I didn’t really want to wear them because of hearing one day they were effective and the next they weren’t. So, I watch a few YouTube videos on people showing if they work or not. Now I wear them all the time because they proved that they work.”
If you believe that masks reduce the risk of spreading Covid, how did you acquire/develop that belief? Parents? News media? The CDC?
Alan Tibbetts:
“I believe there’s a chance masks might help. Various sources, including the CDC”
Alexis Blair:
“By researching, doing tests a home, and the CDC helps me come to a conclusion.”
Anonymous:
“The CDC, and I’ve watched people test the theory and showed proof that shows that it helps stop the spread.
How often have you been to large gatherings where more than a few people were not wearing masks? Any thoughts about that?
Alan Tibbetts:
“I have not been to a large indoor gathering. However, I have been to large outdoor gatherings where people weren’t wearing masks, and it didn’t bother me. It’s their choice, and others can socially distance from non mask wearers if they see fit.”
Alexis Blair:
“ Yes at church, it doesn’t bother me because I know if people didn’t feel good or if they knew of a case near them they wouldn’t go. So, we could continue to meet, and we’re all a big family anyways.”
Anonymous:
“I’ve only been to one. I did feel a little nervous at first, but nothing happened.”
