MASK interviews with PRHS students

When asked whether or not she would wear her mask if it wasn’t required in school, Rylee Smith says, “I would wear it, because I don’t want to spread it to family members who aren’t as healthy as me, and I don’t want to be part of a mass spreading.”
Emma Moreau agrees. “I would [wear a mask] just because even if no one at school has the virus, it would make me feel nervous.” Lisha Powell adds, “I would probably wear them because my parents would want me to wear it. My dad is high-risk, and he’s the main person who works at his job. “
Smith says she isn’t skeptical about the effectiveness of masks because “if everyone wears a mask, it can help prevent the spread.” She believes this because “I’ve seen a lot on the news about effectiveness, and my mom is an environmental health and safety manager at Bates, so she’s informed.”
Moreau is not quite as certain. “I don’t think I am [skeptical]. Masks aren’t 100% effective, but combined with other protocols, it helps make them more effective.” She adds, “If you think about sneezing into our elbow, masks are like a much more effective elbow, containing the droplets.” Powell agrees with Moreau, saying “I’m not very skeptical. I know that they’re not 100 percent effective, but they definitely help reduce the risk of getting Covid-19. Different areas had less cases where masks were enforced, especially other countries that are handling the pandemic better than the United States. And also plenty of health professionals have highlighted the importance of wearing masks.”
Smith has only been to one large gathering where people weren’t wearing masks, and says “It was very uncomfortable because most people weren’t wearing masks. I was wearing a mask and tried to stay away from people.” Moreau says, “I went to a few, but most people had masks. It’s not great, but it’s much better if it’s family.” Powell hasn’t been to any large gatherings, saying “I mean, cross country is small; people always wear their masks around others. People can do what they want, but I don’t appreciate people’s actions when they hurt other people. I don’t want cross country to be cancelled as a result of a large gathering with lots of cases associated with it.”
